Bill Bate

“I want the paint to have a life of its own and so leave its application quite loose at times. I endeavour to escape the confines that realism can impose, leaving more expression and less constraint.”

Bill Bate was born in Liverpool in 1962 and having shown an interest in painting from an early age, he went on to study at the prestigious Central Saint Martins School of Art in London, where he gained his fine art degree . It was here that he developed the knowledge and understanding of his practice. It was also here that he was encouraged to develop a more abstract style that can be seen in his work today. His atmospheric paintings focus both on the uses of dramatic lighting and above all on the human form and are emotional responses to the body in movement, at rest, and the body observed. Bate's work has a broad range of influences from Caravaggio to Alma Tadema and Rothko.
